The National Jobs For All Network mourns the death last October of our\u00a0Board member, Barbara Cooper, a\u00a0Tennessee\u00a0state representative for the\u00a0Memphis area.\u00a0\u00a0At 93, Rep. Cooper was the oldest state\u00a0representative in the United States.<\/p>\n

Rep. Cooper was the host and\u00a0lead organizer of the NJFAN-sponsored\u00a0Memphis Jobs for All Town Hall Meeting that brought together a diverse\u00a0group of community and trade union leaders to plan a movement for Jobs\u00a0for All in\u00a0Tennessee.\u00a0The dialogue and speeches at that meeting covered a wide\u00a0range of topics: from job creation to contracts for minority-owned businesses;\u00a0raising wages; securing transportation to work; and jobs for ex-felons.<\/p>\n

\u201cBarbara\u00a0Cooper was a strong defender of people\u2018s rights,\u201d according to Logan\u00a0Martinez, NJFAN Outreach Coordinator who worked closely with Rep.
\nCooper on the Memphis Town Meeting and other projects. \u201cBarbara was\u00a0always ready to step in to help.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0It was a special privilege and an honor to\u00a0have known Barbara Cooper.\u201d Logan recalls that Rep. Cooper secured the\u00a0endorsement by the Organization of Black State Legislators of HR 1000, the\u00a0Jobs for All Act, for which NJFAN served as chief consultant.<\/p>\n

Kevin Bradshaw,\u00a0President of the Memphis West Tennessee Central Labor\u00a0Council, AFL-CIO, has this to say about Barbara:<\/p>\n

“Rep. Barbara Cooper was a drum major for labor unions. She believed\u00a0in working people. Barbara was accessible and strived to always serve\u00a0the people. She believed everyone deserved to be treated fairly. As a\u00a0hard worker herself, she stayed on top of the issues facing the people of\u00a0Memphis. She strongly supported jobs for everyone and was the leading\u00a0force in the Memphis Jobs for All Town Hall meeting in 2018.\u00a0\u00a0Rep.\u00a0Barbara Cooper worked for the unity of the people of Memphis to make\u00a0the world a better place.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
