December 4-5, 2015<\/a><\/strong>. \u00a0U.S. Congressman John Conyers is coming to Ohio in conjunction with the Jobs for All National 2015\/16 Tour<\/strong>. \u00a0The Town Hall meetings will feature testimony on the impact of long-term unemployment and poverty on the Dayton community.\u00a0 There will be presentations on job creation, health care, raising the minimum wage, and other important issues. The primary goal is to elevate the jobs issue to national prominence.<\/p>\n

Rep. Conyers is the Dean of the U.S. Congress, and the first African American to serve in this capacity.\u00a0 He represents the Detroit, Michigan area and has been a strong voice for progressive ideas including job creation with his introduction of HR 1000 and healthcare with HR 676. He is also co-chair of the Full Employment Caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives.<\/p>\n

June 19, 2015 “Jobs for All, Green Jobs, Climate Change, and Ending Poverty.” <\/strong>Executive Committe member Philip Harvey<\/strong> will appear this Friday with Joel Segal [Former Senior Legislative Aide to Representative John Conyers] and Nakisha Glover on a DC area talk show on the subject of “Jobs for All, Green Jobs, Climate Change, and Ending Poverty.”<\/strong> It’s the “Nightwolf Radio Show” on WPFW, 89.3 FM, streaming live on the WPFW web site for those outside the DC listening area.<\/p>\n

June 20, 2015<\/strong>, 9:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum will host the twelfth annual Roosevelt Reading Festival<\/strong>, a free public event. The day-long program will highlight the recently published work of sixteen authors. It will be held in the Henry A. Wallace Center at the FDR Presidential Library and Home.<\/p>\n

Two of the talks are by NJFAC Executive Committee members Sheila D. Collins and Gertrude Schaffner Goldberg<\/strong>, authors of When Government Helped: Learning from the Successes and Failures of the New Deal<\/em>, Oxford University Press, 2014.<\/p>\n

In six concurrent sessions throughout the day, authors of works that draw upon the Roosevelt Library archives–or focus on the Roosevelt era–will present talks followed by question-and-answer sessions and book signings. Copies of the authors’ books will be available for sale. In 1944 President Franklin D. Roosevelt called on Congress to recognize that access to decent employment is a human right that the U.S. government has a duty to secure. This conception of the “right to work” subsequently won formal recognition in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights–drafted by a U.N. Committee chaired by Eleanor Roosevelt and adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations with the full support of the U.S. Government in 1948. This is still the accepted meaning of the “right to work” internationally, notwithstanding the misappropriation of the term by anti-union activists in the United States who refuse to recognize that the right to unionize is itself recognized as a human right in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

This workshop, co-sponsored by the Philadelphia Unemployment Project and the National Jobs for All Coalition, will report on the nuts and bolts of two related initiatives to secure the right to work (decent jobs for all) in the United States. The first initiative is the “Raise the Wage PA” movement to increase Pennsylvania’s minimum wage. The second is the national effort to promote Rep. John Conyers’ “Humphrey-Hawkins 21st Century Full Employment and Training Act” (H.R. 1000). The workshop will explain both of these initiatives for those who are unfamiliar with them, but the main focus of the discussion will be on strategies for mobilizing grass roots support for the goal of finally securing the human right to a decent job for everyone who wants to work.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
