New polling from Morning Consult, a global survey research firm, commissioned by NJFAN board member, David Riemer, offers an encouraging signal: Americans across party lines support a seven-part federal policy package designed to reduce poverty, strengthen economic security, and address the affordability challenges facing families across the country.
The work-based Package brings together multiple solutions—including a nationwide jobs program for unemployed and underemployed workers; increases to the federal minimum wage; expanded Earned Income and Child Tax Credits; greater childcare assistance; and stronger Supplemental Security Income and minimum Social Security benefits.
Importantly, every component receives majority support from both Democrats and Republicans. Sixty-four percent of U.S. adults support creating a new federal jobs program offering transitional jobs to unemployed and underemployed people, including 71% of Democrats and 68% of Republicans. Overall support for the other proposals ranges from 59% to 67%.
The polling builds on a 2025 Urban Institute analysis examining the potential impact of implementing these seven policies together. Using 2018 as its baseline, the analysis estimated that the package would have increased employment by nearly 7 million workers, raised total earnings by more than $300 billion, and reduced poverty by 73%—representing approximately 27 million fewer people living in poverty.
The takeaway is significant: reducing poverty and improving affordability does not depend on a single policy solution. A comprehensive economic security agenda can address employment, wages, family income, and caregiving costs together—and the individual components of that agenda command broad bipartisan public support.
